Key Formulas

Celsius → Fahrenheit

°F = f(°C)

Fahrenheit → Celsius

°C = f(°F)

Celsius → Kelvin

K = f(°C)

Kelvin → Celsius

°C = f(K)

Formula

°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8

Fahrenheit and Celsius use different zero points and interval sizes. Subtracting 32 aligns the zero points, then dividing by 1.8 converts Fahrenheit-sized intervals to Celsius-sized intervals. This is useful when a US weather report, recipe, thermostat, or thermometer must be read on a Celsius scale.

350 °F = 176.67 °C

A thermometer reading of 98.6°F must be recorded in a chart that uses degrees Celsius.

98.6 °F = 37 °C

A thermostat set to 72°F is converted to 22.22°C for someone familiar with Celsius controls.

72 °F = 22.22 °C

A forecast at 32°F is converted to 0°C, the reference point near which water freezes under ordinary atmospheric conditions.

32 °F = 0 °C
