Convert temperature, wind speed, and barometric pressure for weather reports

A forecast from a European weather site says 22°C with wind at 15 km/h, but your local reports use Fahrenheit and mph. You need quick, reliable conversions to know if you should pack a jacket.

Context

Weather data crosses unit systems at every turn. The US reports temperature in Fahrenheit and wind speed in mph. Most of the world uses Celsius and km/h. Aviation and marine forecasts add knots into the mix, and barometric pressure shows up in millibars, kPa, atm, or psi depending on the instrument.

A pilot reading a METAR report, a sailor checking wind speed in knots, and a traveler comparing a US forecast to a European one all need the same numbers to mean the same thing, no matter which units display them.

Why this matters

Reading an international weather forecast

A travel app shows tomorrow's high as 18°C for your upcoming trip to Spain. You think in Fahrenheit and want to know if that's a light-jacket day or a T-shirt day.

Checking wind speed before an outdoor event

The marine forecast lists wind at 20 knots. You're used to mph from car speeds and want a gut-check on how strong that actually is before heading out on the water.

Comparing barometric pressure readings

Your home barometer reads 1.02 atm, but the news broadcast quotes the approaching system in millibars, which run close to kPa. You want to know if the two readings agree.

Understanding a storm's wind speed in familiar units

A hurricane advisory reports sustained winds of 120 km/h. You want that number in mph to compare it against storm categories you already recognize.

Frequently asked

The forecast says 30°C. Is that hot?

30°C is 86°F, a warm summer day. Use Celsius to Fahrenheit for any forecast temperature. Most climates treat anything above 30°C (86°F) as hot.

How fast is 40 km/h wind in mph?

40 km/h is about 25 mph, enough to make umbrellas awkward and small branches sway. Use km/h to mph to convert any wind speed reading from an international forecast.

Why do marine and aviation forecasts use knots instead of mph?

Knots (nautical miles per hour) align with degrees of latitude, so they work with nautical charts without extra math. Use mph to knots to convert a familiar road-speed number into the units a marine or flight forecast will show.

My barometer reads in atm. How does that compare to the millibars on the news?

Standard atmospheric pressure is 1 atm, about 101.3 kPa or 1013 millibars. Use atm to psi or kPa to psi as a bridge if your instrument reports psi instead of kPa or millibars.

Is 0°C the same as freezing in Fahrenheit?

Yes. 0°C is exactly 32°F, the freezing point of water. Use Celsius to Fahrenheit for any near-freezing forecast to see how close conditions are to ice.
