How to Convert Kilograms to Pounds in Your Head

The exact conversion factor between kilograms and pounds is 1 kg = 2.20462262 lbs — not a number anyone is going to multiply by in their head while standing on a scale or reading a luggage allowance. Fortunately, there’s a mental shortcut that gets you within a few percent of the right answer almost instantly, which is close enough for the vast majority of everyday situations: checking your weight, estimating a parcel’s shipping cost, or figuring out if your suitcase is under the airline limit.

The “double and add 10%” method

To convert kilograms to pounds in your head:

  1. Double the kilogram value.
  2. Add 10% of that doubled value.

That’s it. Here’s why it works: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs, and doubling gives you 2.0 — close, but about 10% short of 2.2. Adding back 10% of the doubled number closes most of that gap.

Example: convert 70 kg to pounds

  • Double 70 → 140
  • 10% of 140 → 14
  • 140 + 14 = 154 lbs

The exact answer is 154.32 lbs — the mental method gets you within 0.3 lbs, more than close enough for checking your weight or a shipping estimate.

Example: convert 25 kg (a typical checked bag limit) to pounds

  • Double 25 → 50
  • 10% of 50 → 5
  • 50 + 5 = 55 lbs

The exact answer is 55.1 lbs — again, essentially exact for practical purposes.

Going the other way: pounds to kilograms

The reverse trick is “halve, then subtract 10%”:

  1. Halve the pound value.
  2. Subtract 10% of that halved value.

Example: convert 160 lbs to kilograms

  • Halve 160 → 80
  • 10% of 80 → 8
  • 80 − 8 = 72 kg

The exact answer is 72.57 kg — off by about half a kilogram, which is well within the margin of error of a typical bathroom scale.

Why this approximation works so well

The “double + 10%” trick is really just a rounding of the true factor: 2 × 1.1 = 2.2, which is very close to the real factor of 2.20462. The error from using 2.2 instead of 2.20462 is only about 0.2%, which is why the mental shortcut tracks the exact answer so closely across a wide range of values. The approximation gets slightly less accurate as numbers get larger (in absolute terms), but the percentage error stays constant at roughly 0.2%, so it’s reliable whether you’re converting a 5 kg parcel or a 500 kg motorcycle.

When you need the exact figure

The mental shortcut is great for sanity checks, rough estimates, and everyday situations — but there are a few contexts where the small error matters:

  • Medication dosing is often calculated per kilogram of body weight; a 0.2% error compounded across a dosage calculation isn’t something to estimate by hand.
  • Shipping costs at scale — if a courier charges per pound and you’re shipping hundreds of packages, small per-unit errors add up.
  • Regulatory weight limits where you’re right at the boundary — if your bag is “exactly” at 50 lbs by the mental method, it’s worth checking the precise figure before you get to the airport.
