I'm comparing a terahertz spectrometer (0.5 THz) with an ultrasonic sensor (40 kHz). How much higher in frequency is the THz instrument?

0.5 THz = 500 million kHz. Divide: 500,000,000 ÷ 40 = 12.5 million times higher. The wavelengths differ too — ultrasonic at ~8 mm, terahertz at ~600 micrometres.

My data acquisition system samples at 1 MHz (1,000 kHz). How does it compare in frequency to a terahertz source?

1 THz = 1,000,000,000 kHz. Divide: 1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1,000,000 (one million). The terahertz source is a million times higher in frequency. Your DAQ board can't directly measure THz — you'd need a heterodyne receiver that down-converts to your kHz sample range.

Why is the kHz-to-THz scale so extreme?

kHz counts thousands of cycles per second (audio scale). THz counts trillions per second (far-infrared scale). The gap is a billion-fold because RF/audio systems and optical/terahertz systems operate in fundamentally different physical domains requiring entirely different hardware. A research paper mentions 'terahertz source modulated at 10 kHz.' What does that mean?

The terahertz carrier (~1 THz) is amplitude-modulated — turned on and off — at 10 kHz using a mechanical chopper or electronic switch. The THz carrier frequency doesn't change; the modulation adds a low-frequency envelope that a lock-in amplifier can detect with high sensitivity. The 10 kHz modulation and 1 THz carrier are on completely different frequency scales.
