Why do terahertz researchers talk about frequencies so much larger than Wi-Fi (MHz/GHz)?

Terahertz (THz) represents the far-infrared part of the spectrum — typically 0.1 to 10 THz. These frequencies offer wavelengths in micrometres, allowing imaging through packaging and revealing molecular vibrations. Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz (0.0024 THz) is a million times lower in frequency. A terahertz spectrometer measures samples at 2 THz. How many megahertz is that?

2 THz = 2,000,000 MHz. That's about 833× higher than Wi-Fi. Terahertz instruments probe far-infrared properties — detecting counterfeit medicines, analysing crystal structure, or studying archaeological artefacts without damage.

Is terahertz radiation harmful, like microwaves or X-rays?

No. Terahertz frequencies are non-ionising (unlike X-rays) and much lower energy than visible light. At 1–10 THz, terahertz is considered safe for medical imaging and airport security screening. The wavelengths (tens of micrometres) are too long to ionise atoms.

My research uses 0.5 MHz oscillators. What's the terahertz equivalent?

0.5 MHz ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0000005 THz (5 × 10⁻⁷ THz). Your oscillators are firmly in the radio frequency domain. Reaching terahertz requires lasers, quantum cascade devices, or photomixers — completely different technology from MHz oscillator circuits.
