Formula

gradians = radians × (200 ÷ π)

Physics and robotics systems output angles in radians; European surveying software, many theodolites, and some older scientific calculators operate in gradians. When a site engineer receives calculated bearing angles from a structural analysis program (in radians) and must enter them into a gradian-mode total station, this conversion bridges the gap. It also appears when GIS systems export polygon angles in radians and the planning office's software expects gradians.

Real-World Examples

π/2 radians (right angle) — exactly 100 grad, confirming the theodolite is square to the baseline when it reads 100.00.

1.5708 rad = 100 grad

One radian — 63.66 grad, the conversion reference when a surveying calculation produces a 1-radian bearing from a mathematical formula.

1 rad = 63.66 grad

π radians (straight line) — 200 grad, the bearing for the back-bearing of a traverse leg (pointing opposite direction).

3.1416 rad = 200 grad

π/4 radians — 50 grad, a 45° diagonal bearing expressed in gradian mode on a European total station.

0.7854 rad = 50 grad
